Thoughtful Discovery

Write for us

We welcome pitches that start with a specific question about a familiar object, word, natural pattern, custom or idea, then offer a clear route to a useful explanation.

What to pitch

Send an original idea with a distinct angle and a reason it will interest a curious general reader. Strong pitches name the central question, explain what makes the answer worth exploring, and show how the piece will differ from a broad overview. We welcome reported explanations, concise histories and close readings of everyday phenomena.

A useful proposal

Include a working title, a short summary, the likely shape of the piece, and any relevant sources or experience you would draw on. Say what the reader should understand by the end, and flag uncertainties or competing interpretations. Avoid pitches that depend on specialist advice, unsupported claims or a list of loosely connected facts.

Where to send it

Send proposals through the Contact page and choose the editorial question option. Please include enough detail for us to assess the idea, but do not send a complete draft unless we have asked for one. A proposal is not a promise of publication.

Our point of view

Curiosity begins with looking again.

A small question can make an ordinary object or familiar phrase newly interesting. We follow the clues without pretending every answer is simple.
